According to the European Commission, enforcement of the AI Act begins on 2 August 2026 and new transparency rules apply from that date. The Commission states that interactive systems, including chatbots, must clearly tell users they are interacting with AI, and AI-generated or altered content must be labeled and carry machine-readable marks.
Organizations must update product processes: add compliance KPIs, train UX and legal teams, and include metadata checks in QA. Contracts with model and AI service providers should specify obligations to deliver labeling mechanisms and support integration of machine-readable marks. Reuters and other outlets note enforcement will be coordinated with national authorities, so timely compliance coordination is required.
Major risks include inconsistent metadata across channels, UX failures causing ambiguous labeling, and gaps in the AI supply chain where providers do not support metadata. A common pitfall is adding only visible notices without machine-readable marks, which does not satisfy the Commission's requirement.
Technical and process actions must start immediately: audit, UI updates, implement machine-readable metadata, revise contracts and QA procedures. The requirements and deadline are set by the European Commission (https://digital-strategy.ec.europa.eu/), so a compliance plan must be in place before 2 August 2026.
